andijan

there are reports that andijan is rebelling. there had been protests against the uzbek government for the last several days. to be honest, with all my hearings this week, i wasn't able to follow it that closely. but then earlier today it turned violent. the the uzbek government has sealed off the town, closed the kazakh border and cut off foreign media. meanwhile, kyrgyzstan has also closed its own border with uzbekistan (andijan is right by the kyrgyz border).

as with all things central asian, the best place for updates is the argus. see specifically these two posts from this morning. you can also dig deeper into his archives to read about the protests over the past few days. and make sure to read the comments to all of the posts, nathan's got people from central asia supplementing the media reports.

i haven't heard from any of my friends in uzbekistan yet. none of them are anywhere near andijan, but i'm still curious what they know and think about the situation.
