google.co.il

for over a year, i've been getting hits from people who are doing a search for google.co.il and ending up at this post. the searches are never google searches. they're always through some other search engine i've never heard of. it's not an overwhelming number of hits, but it's a fair number; enough to notice. and it's pretty consistent. it probably pads my hit count by a few extra visits each week.

but this has been bugging me ever since i first noticed them: why would anyone search for a url of a search engine? google.co.il still exists and you can get there simply by typing google.co.il into your address bar. there's no point in typing those same characters into a search engine instead of the address bar. all it does is add another step. and yet, based on the number of hits i get, i don't think it's just one person doing it. so why are several different people coming up with this same ridiculous idea?

does anyone have any theory to explain it?

actually, i'm hoping that by writing this post i can draw some of those google.co.il hits here and, whoever you are who's doing this can leave an explanation in the comments. ya gotta help me, i'm dying of curiosity
