the forgotten war

the last couple of months several bloggers have started referring to the iraq war as the forgotten war. but the real forgotten war is the three month old conflict in gaza. when the israeli offensive in gaza began in late june, it made lots of headlines. but then it was superseded by the war in lebanon. the israeli war in lebanon reached an uneasy truce with foreign cooperation. but the war in gaza continues, getting almost no coverage outside of the arab press.

i am just as much a part of the problem. i posted about hamas on the eve of the gaza offensive, then later got all caught up in the lebanon thing.

meanwhile, israeli soldier gilad shalit is still being held prisoner somewhere. over 200 palestinians have been killed (mostly civilians) and the gazan economy is in a perpetual state of collapse. 2 israeli soldiers have been killed since the offensive began, and one of the two was accidentally shot by another israeli soldier. it's still not clear what exactly israel is accomplishing in gaza. they might just be keeping it up to avoid the perception of another loss.

kind of like what i sometimes suspect bush is doing in iraq.
