sherlock joe

trips by american politicians to iraq have always been a little bizarre. the prospect of using a war zone as some kind of campaign prop is such an odd and macabre idea. recently i think the visits have been getting even stranger. john mccain's shopping trip to that baghdad market last april was a exercise in the surreal. and now we have this week's visit by senator joe lieberman.

lieberman came to baghdad, looked around and met with soldiers. then he reached the surprising conclusion that u.s. forced had made "significant progress" and that u.s. troops needed to stay longer. one can only wonder what part of his experience convinced him that was the way to go. maybe it was that note the soldiers gave him. the one with the star at the bottom.
