PETA's anti-pollution campaign

i've run into this argument before, but i still don't understand the logic behind the eating meat causes pollution claim. i mean, if animal wastes generate a lot of air pollution, wouldn't that be true even if people stopped eating animals?

you see stats about the tons of methane cow farts let off into the atmosphere. won't they still be farting even if everyone were a vegan? which begs the question: what does PETA want to happen with all the cows? if PETA claims that cows' bodies, and the efforts to feed and house them cause all this pollution, does that mean they want the cows to be eliminated? that doesn't sound like ethical treatment to me.

i don't eat red meat. so i don't really have a personal steak in this fight. i just don't think PETA is making sense on this one.
