"serious doubts"

i find it really amusing that the best president ahmedinejad can do is say that he harbors "serious doubts" that his country is arming the taliban in afghanistan.

don't get me wrong, i think it's highly unlikely that the iranian government (by that i mean the supreme leader and his advisory council) would arm the taliban. it's not in their interest, they've invested too much in the karzai government and they had a horrible time with the taliban back when they were in control of afghanistan. but the iranian government is also famously divided and its inner workers are very opaque to outsiders. but just because it isn't in the central government's interest, who knows what some border commander is doing?

which is why ahmedinejad's statement is so funny. it's remarkably candid because the iranian president seems to be acknowledging that even he isn't completely sure what is going on. a lot of countries have "rogue elements", or whatever you want to call them. but the government leaders always want to pretend that their regime is fully in control. i guess not this time.
