palin's appeal

here's the weird thing about mccain's choice of palin: i think it's meant to be a clear play for disaffected clinton supporters. and yet those very same clinton supporters are the ones who are most receptive to the "experience" argument. indeed, obama's alleged inexperience was the centerpiece of clinton's pitch during the primary and it was the #1 reason i heard from clinton supporters when they explained why they weren't supporting obama. so while, palin is a woman and might seem to appeal to the clinton supporter who wants to see a female president, supporting the mccain ticket because of palin would mean going against the logic of the argument they once made against obama.

even before you look at her substantive positions on say, abortion, it seems that any appeal to former clintonistas are undercut by her thin resume.

(this is putting aside the fact that i don't really buy the whole "experience" argument. the american presidency is a unique job. no one is really "experienced" in the job until they get there. but it is funny to watch the obama campaign suddenly making the "inexperienced" charge against someone else)
