shooting itself in the foot

yesterday in my post about the american raid into syria over the weekend, i wrote: "neither side [including the u.s.] has all that much credibility in situations like this." this is a perfect example why i think that the american side has no more credibility than the syrian government:
A senior American official said that all the people killed in the assault were militants, and that women and children living with the militants had not been harmed.
numerous reporters have interviewed civilians who were injured in the attack. there's a video of a seriously injured woman describing how her child was killed by u.s. forces during the raid. i guess it is possible that all of that was faked, but if so the u.s. at least has to address its existence. instead, it looks like just another one of a long line of instances where the u.s. is simply lying to the american press.

which is stupid. at least it is if you want american military spokespeople to be taken seriously by the press and the public. (clearly the military does. that's why they have spokespeople). there's a lot of media out there that isn't the american media. unlike the american media, those sources aren't necessarily willing to give the u.s. military any benefit of the doubt or swallow whatever horseshit its spokespeople are serving. and thanks to the internet, the foreign media is widely available to the american public. this can only hurt the u.s. military in the long run.
