The odd thing is that the Russian campaign to free Maria Butina pretty much confirms that she was a spy (if she wasn't why would so many high-placed Russians care?) So why is Russia doing this when it sends such a clear "she's guilty" message?
I think it's because they know that Trump is too stupid to think like that and, in light of Trump's statements that Russia did not interfere in the 2016 election because they say they did not interfere in the 2016, maybe they hope that he will pardon Butina just because Russia says she is not a spy.
