Giving in on the Wall

One year ago, the government shut down because the Democrats (rightly) refused to provide funding for the border wall. The shutdown was stupid and hurt the U.S. economy for no real reason, but the Democrats "won" in the sense that they held the line and refused to give Trump a penny for his stupid wall. Trump tried to get around that by declaring a bullshit emergency to allow him to steal money from the military to pay for the wall, a scheme that is still being challenged in court-- but again, these shenanigans show Trump on the defensive. The bottom line is he could not get funding for his signature proposal and his gambit of shutting down the government to force Democrats to give it to him utterly failed.

So why the fuck would the Democratic-controlled House do this now?

Congress Approves Spending Package to Avoid Shutdown, Clearing It for Trump
 ...
A second package that contained $738 billion in defense funding and funding for the administration’s immigration policies passed 81 to 11, the Senate’s final roll call vote of 2019. That measure would allocate $1.375 billion for border barrier construction, placing no limitations on Mr. Trump’s ability to transfer funds from other Pentagon accounts to pay for the wall. It does not, however, replace the $3.6 billion in military construction funding that the president had previously allocated to build a border wall.

I don't get it. If Democrats were so determined to hold the line before, why did they give Trump $1,375 billion to do as he wishes for "border security" now? Have they lost their will to stand up to the guy? Didn't they just, you know, impeach the motherfucker the day before yesterday?
