ah insomnia.
we saw a very long engagement tonight. i am quite a fan of jean-pierre jeunet, with all his overstylized goodness. "engagement" was probably his most violent film. but then, that's what you get when much of it took place on a WW1 battlefield. the movie is really beautifully and creatively filmed.
the plot is extremely complex. i'm sure if i saw this film a few more times i would be dazzled by its cleverness and all of it's twists and turns. but it is so intricate, it can be hard to keep up with. about midway through i decided to just let go and, if audrey tautou's character drew some connection between the millions of disparate clues, i would just take her word for it that she was on the right track. once i stopped worrying about following every detail, i could just sit back and enjoy the film. i could even marvel at the intricacies of the plot even though i could not even begin to explain it all its twists and turns
