Look at the bright side

One big difference between the U.S. under Trump and “illiberal democracies” is that Trump, unlike Orban, Putin, or whatshisname in Poland, is really broadly unpopular. So while Trump does pose a danger to American Democracy, I don’t think stories like these are quite the same cautionary tale for America as they are sometimes presented to be. The almost complete domination of the political sphere by the governing party is only really possible if the governing party has the support of the public at large.
